You remember this fifties or sixties armchair that I had stashed away in my parents' garage?
It was orange (so not me!), and scratched up, and not a beauty. But, as the ever lovely Jess from Spool and Spoon pointed out - I couldn't find a better expression myself - it had good bones! I liked the shape of the wood, the caning, the slim back (which you can't really see in this picture). And because I'm a Sunday's child and obviously born lucky, I have three of these armchairs! Yay me! (Well, except for all the work involved in making them pretty again...)
So I took out my sanders, my paint brushes, and started with the process. Tackling the wooden part of the chair was not a big problem, I finished that in one lovely sunny day. But then I had to cover it with new fabric, and that was a pain in the hiney. The upholstery has a very odd shape (can't really see that in the photo either) and so I had to hand-sew everything. Yuck!
Fast-forward two weeks. Here it is, my lovely new armchair!
I chose a very thick cotton fabric in summery colors because they totally match the basement bar (that we finally finished, too, so expect some photos soon!). I decided to paint all of the chair white, including the caning, even though I have read on some blogs that this could be quite tricky. Wasn't tricky at all, so I'd totally do that again.
And the best thing is that these chairs aren't just pretty, they are also very comfy. Probably the best place to sit after a long day with a cocktail in your hand. Which is what we'll do tonight, when all our neighbor's come over.
What do you think about old stuff? What's your favorite old stuff? Wine? Furniture? Vintage Dior? I'd love to hear about it!
Whatever your weekend will be like, have a good one!
PS Okay I lied about the mad men - I hope none of our neighbors are mad! ;-)
